Ensure that your tires and your frame are securely locked. When securing your bike for longer periods of time, use the quick release function to remove the front tire and lock it together with the frame and the back tire, securing both to a fixed object such as a street light or fence.

Choose busy storage locations with high visibility where thieves are less likely to operate. It is the best to use the “two-lock” method, such as a U-lock & a cable lock to maximize security when locking your bike. The bike lock should not touch the ground, so thieves cannot benefit from creating leverage to break the lock. Link for https://youtu.be/CeNV11VP9fI

My padlock will not open by using the key. What should I do? My padlock will not open by using the key. What should I do? My padlock will not open by using the key. What should I do?

Your padlock will not open with a key? There might be several reasons for this such as:
– You do not use the correct key for this padlock. Sounds crazy but does happen.
– It is freezing. Freezing temperatures might lead to a frozen padlock and in this case the moveable parts in the padlock will not move and thus the key will not open the padlock. You can solve this by putting the padlock into warm water for a while. This should unfreeze the padlock and should allow to open it again. Of course this will work only if your padlock is close to your house / apartment. If this is not the case, you can try car- anti freeze sprays. You will have to wait a while and have to repeat the whole procedure of spraying the anti-freeze into the padlock but at some point it will open.
For reducing the risk of a freezing lock we recommend to use lubricants which have a freezing temperature below water.
– You are not in a freezing area but you have dust or / and humidity. Moisture in the padlock can cause that the inner parts of the padlock rust. In this case they will stick and will not work as freely anymore. Same thing applies for dust in the padlock. If this happens, you can use a machine oil (silicone or Teflon bases lubricant) which you have to apply for the keyhole and the space around the area where the shackle goes into the padlock. Try to push the shackle a bit more into the padlock and try to insert they key into the keyhole. This combination of motion and lubricant should help to unstick the inner parts of the padlock. If this still does not work very well, try to soak the padlock in the lubricant.

There are some padlocks for which the keys are purposely the same. Such padlocks are called “keyed alike” padlocks. The reason for keyed alike padlocks is that e.g. lots of people need access for padlocks in a certain area. Think about the amazing people of the green maintenance who ensure that our parks and green areas look well or the street cleaning people – for accessing the boxes with their tools they need keys. For making it easier and more workable most of these boxes in a city are keyed alike. Keyed alike padlocks are ass well very common for people in their houses – for using the same key for a barn and the chain which is locking the fence for example.
When you buy a padlock which is not keyed alike then the keys of another padlock of the same type & model will differ.

Which bike lock is safe? Which bike lock is safe? Which bike lock is safe?

There is not “the” answer for this question. It always depends a bit on your individual situation. When you park your bike in a very lively area, chain locks, cable locks and D locks can be secure in this surrounding. When you park your bike in a very lonely, while night not illumintaed area, then it is more an invitation for stealing the bike. The challenge in such situation is that the potential thieves have a lot of time and while night the are even barely visible due to the lock of illumination. So the can take time trying to break the best bike locks.
Sometimes people do not lock their bike to something which cannot be moved – e.g. by locking your bike parts but still allowing the option that a thief is lifting the bike and is carrying it away. So finding “the safest bike lock” is a mix out of the usage of two different but good bike lock types (e.g. a D shape with a cable lock), the surrounding where you want to park you bike – decide for safe areas and a good locking method – lock your bike to something which cannot be moved and lock both wheels as well as the frames and if possible the saddle. When you buy a bike lock invest per lock always around 10% of the value of your bike.

Which bike lock is good for securing my bike? Which bike lock is good for securing my bike? Which bike lock is good for securing my bike?

What bike lock you should get depends on several aspects. First think about the value of your bike. Around 10% of the bike price you should invest into your bike lock. Then think about the locking time and area you would use typically. Will it be a crowded city center or more a suburban area with far less people. Will you leave your bike locked for a quick stop only or an all- day lockup? When your conclusion is that it will be a less crowded area for an all- day lock up, we recommend to use a U-lock and a chain or cable lock for which you should aim a high security level. When it will be a more crowded area, use a U-lock and the mentioned chain or cable lock combination anyways – you can consider average security rating. The reason why we always recommend to use two different bike lock types even in crowded areas is that this will allow you to lock both wheels and the frame. It happens even in crowded areas very often that a wheel will be stolen when the opportunity was given by the locking way. So for avoiding surprises and for having more fun with your bike, invest into good bike locks and make sure that you will lock all wheels & the frame to something which cannot be removed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeNV11VP9fI

Which bike lock cannot be cut? Which bike lock cannot be cut? Which bike lock cannot be cut?

Most of the D locks / U locks as well as some chain and folding locks of A brands are very difficult to be cut. Some of the cable locks are as well very difficult to be cut – means you will need a breaking force pressure created by e.g. a bolt cutter which is 5000 pounds and higher (some even can resist up to 14.400 pounds of breaking force pressure). Especially for cable locks it is often said that they are not that secure but as mentioned it depends on the breaking force pressure they can stand. The construction of a cable lock as an impact on this. A 7×19 galvanized wire rope could manage very high breaking force powers.
But in the end there is no lock which cannot be cut at all – it only needs incredible force to do so (e.g. heavy machines) and thieves will not be able to use them in the streets.

Do all padlocks have a different key? Do all padlocks have a different key? Do all padlocks have a different key?

Good question with no short answer. You have very different key types per company / product. There are key types such as dimple keys, tubular keys, paracentric keys, skeleton keys and many more. Within a key type a company could offer keyed alike lock solutions and non keyed alike lock. Keyed alike lock solutions are for example for home owners who want to open different doors of their house with the same key. This could mean as well that you can buy a multipack / set of padlocks which can be opened with the same key. Non keyed alike solutions have a different key cutting. This means that if you buy a single padlock pack with 3 keys, you cannot open another padlock with these 3 keys. But – depending on the size of the padlock and the pins which are inside the padlock, you can have only a certain amount of key cutting differentiation until the key cutting will repeat. It is very unlikely that you will find another padlock which can be open with your key although they exist.

I cannot open my padlock with the key. What should I do? I cannot open my padlock with the key. What should I do? I cannot open my padlock with the key. What should I do?

Your padlock will not open with a key? There might be several reasons for this such as:
– You do not use the correct key for this padlock. Sounds crazy but does happen.
– It is freezing. Freezing temperatures might lead to a frozen padlock and in this case the moveable parts in the padlock will not move and thus the key will not open the padlock. You can solve this by putting the padlock into warm water for a while. This should unfreeze the padlock and should allow to open it again.
